Buttermilk Substitute Using Powdered Buttermilk

  • 4 Tablespoons powdered buttermilk

Buttermilk Substitute Using Lemon Juice or Distilled White Vinegar

  • 1 cup (8 ounces or 227 grams) 2% milk, at room temperature
  • 1 Tablespoon freshly squeezed and strained lemon juice OR distilled white vinegar

Buttermilk Substitute Using Sour Cream or Thick, Strained Plain Yogurt (like Greek yogurt or Skyr)

  • ½ cup (4 ounces or 113 grams) sour cream or thick, strained plain yogurt (e.g. Greek yogurt or Skyr)
  • ½ cup (4 ounces or 113 grams) water

Buttermilk Substitute Using Thinner, Unstrained Yogurt

  • cup (5.35 ounces or 152 grams) thin, unstrained yogurt
  • cup (2.65 ounces or 75 grams) water

Instructions
 

  • Make the buttermilk. In a small bowl or a liquid measuring cup, combine the ingredient pairing of your choice. Whisk to combine and let sit to thicken for at least 5 minutes before using in the recipe of your choice.
